Families of Autistic Kids

Autism and Insurance is like trying to mix together oil and water!

I'm not sure how insurance is handled in every state but in the State of Oregon where we live, we now have
Oregon Mental Health Parity Effective Jan 1 2008, HB 2918, Parity for Pervasive Developmental Disorders:
(excerpt)
"(b)Pervasive development disorder" means a neurological condition that includes: Aspergers Syndrome, Autism, developmental delay, developmental disability, or mental retardation."
(c) "Rehabilitation services" means physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy services to restore or improve function.

Apparently, under this so-called mandated law, insurance companies in Oregon are NOT allowed to discriminate and MUST provide these therapies, but many insurance companies here do NOT follow this law like in our case, passing you off on numerous dead end expensive referrals that lead to NO help, while only offering Ritalin as a solution.
What good is this mandated law when insurance companies completely disregard it and poor working families like ours can't afford a lawyer to fight this?

Well enough of how it is here in Oregon. And sadly misery loves company--Oregon isn't the only US state having problems...

I do get really tired of people asking why one of our twin boys has autism, but not the other.
Well if the same situation can happen in IDENTICAL TWINS, (one having ASD, the other does not) then it can certainly happen to our fraternal twins!

Recently I came across a news report from out of IOWA under “Autism & Insurance Part 3″ dated Nov 12th 2008. Part of it discussed a family that has IDENTICAL TWIN BOYS of which one has Autism, the other does not. They are having trouble getting the one with ASD covered under insurance as well as help for him. The IDENTICAL TWINS are grandsons to State senator Daryl Beall of Iowa.

I’ve often wondered what the Beall family thinks why one twin has it and not the other. Maybe at this point, they don’t care but only want proper help and insurance coverage for their one twin son.

The news articles are now archived on the news web site and it no longer has the videos. Fortunately, because the THREE reports interested me, I had saved them (text and video) from back in November and recently posted it up for anyone interested ONLINE HERE

You can still read the Iowa articles under Autism and Insurance in three parts here but they no longer provide the videos:
