we had - my husband and i - an appointment with a member of the local C.A.M.H.S. on wednesday. we have previously met with a psychiatrist with concerns over sophie behaviour. in the almost 11 years since sophie was diagnosed this was the first time someone had sat us down and actually explained to us what happened when sophie has sensory meltdown. it all seem s so much clearer now, i can't believe that no-one has truly explained it to us before. my husband said he felt like the clouds had been lifted. we know she likes pressure on her ears and shoulders and wearing sunglasses but never really understood why. i feel as if i've been wanderind around blindly until now. we are now looking into ear defenders, weighted blankets etc. has anyone else ever used any of these? please let me know. thanks.

PS. it stands for Children & Adolescents Mental Health Services

saw the psychiatrist again this week. they are really impressed with the way sophie has improved with the use of ear defenders. we are now awaiting for her to be seen by the occupational therapist who will give us a detailed report. the psychiatrist seems to think sophie has a lot of unlocked potential and with the right help her life could turn around. i'm aware we shouldn't get our hopes up too high but i am so pleased someone sees her as a person, not just a child with autism.

Both of my children with Autism have severe sensory issues and both are different, which doesn't help one bit. Matthew (4) is a sensory seeker so he runs into everyone including his sensory defensive sister, Lauren. But Matthew is very sensitive to sounds. He plugs his ears and finds a place to hide and rock. Today when there was a strange noise on TV he ran into his room with his ears covered and hid. Lauren is very sensory defensive. She is my one who doesn't like to be touched except on her own terms. She's also very sensitive to noises and plugs her ears and chews her clothing up when things get to be too much. Chewing bracelets and necklaces she chews through in a day so I"m looking for tougher more "age appropriate" (as her school puts it) things she can chew.

I know when Michael was younger if I even turned the mixer on he would start screaming and holding his ears..I had to get him some ear plugs,And like Sophie started to cut his hair at home because all the sounds at the beauty salon or barber shop would send him into over load. Now at 17 he still holds one hand over his ear when he goes into a public restroom..the sound of the overhead fan bothers him.......In my sons case it has got a little better with age....(((HUGS)))

my sophie used to hate having her hair cut when she was . a friend of mine used to follow around the room on her hands and knees to cut it. i used to have it done at home, not in a salon. i found that actual ear defenders help sophie with noise, as opposed to the ones that fit inside the ears, she doesn't like those.

My son is almost 5 and we cant seem to get him to understand that it does not hurt to have your hair washed or cut. We take hours cutting it just because of the problems. We can go to stores because the noise hurts him and we cant seem to find glasses that keep all the light out. We have tubes in his ears but this still does not help! We are looking for ways to help him! If any one knows any thing please help.!!

well, the ear defenders worked an absolute treat! she wore them at the dinner table and she wears them to school on the bus. as for the fireworks display, she was absolutely mesmerised! we still couldn't stand around too many people, but as soon as the fireworks started she stood absolutely still for over 20 minutes. we coulodn't believe the difference something like this could make to her. she just seems so much more relaxed in general. she even put them on this morning when nanny came to fetch her. she looks around a lot more, rather than hiding herself.

Hi, weighted blankets work great with Steven he likes then allot as well as deep hugs, and the ear defenders we uses a pair of head phones made for when you are at gun ranges!! I hope they work for sophie.

Hi Jacqui'..I know that when my granddaughter has a meltdown..my daughter puts pressure on her forhead & it seems to calm her down right away. I have even done it a few times. Sky's TSS also does an exercise with her joints but I haven't quite mastered that one yet. I don't know much about this or why she does it..still so much to learn.
