I am a father of an amazing 9 year old boy. He is autistic and hearing impaired. We have come a long way together. He is making great progress. I have started a non-profit to help others. It's called Autism Hope. We are starting classes to teach parents speech, physical & occupational therapies. This way parents can work on these at home to help the chances of speech, etc. My son has been in speech therapy from the age of 2. He started talking this year. I think the difference was my wife and I working with him daily. We know our children better than any therapist or doctor.
About Your Autistic Family Member:
Zack is 9 years old. He is autistic and hearing impaired. He started talking this year. It's so nice to hear his little voice! He is so funny!
Favorite Thing To Do With Your Autistic Family Member:
Play Star Wars. Zack is Darth Vader, full costume, and I'm Luke Skywalker. We have light saber fights.
Thing You Hate Most About Autism:
Ignorance!!! When people look at you in public like you need to control your kid or with that "what's wrong with him look" I have to bite my tongue sometimes. I feel blessed to have Zack, with or without the autism!

MyHotComments Hello Doyle and welcome to Families..my son is now 17 years old so I do understand the rollercoaster we call autism..sometimes anger, frustration, depression..but..I feel blessed like you, to have my son in my life. My son was initally diagnosed by a occupational therapist back when he was 3 and 1/2..so he has been in special ed. since..and has grown by leaps and bounds.I am going to check out your site to..THERE IS POWER IN NUMBERS..I hope my site supports as well as reminds that you are not alone and just as special as your child...I hope to hear from you soon...(((HUGS)))
