About Me:
I am the mother of 4 children ( including my step daughter). My youngest son is autistic..high functioning to a degree. I am a Hospice nurse..have been in hospice for 7 1/2 years now..been a nurse over 21 years. I have two grandsons..with another grandbaby on the way..... I have always been a caregiver even as a child I helped my parents take care of my grandparents..I have a very strong sense of family. I also hope I can help anyone I can where autism/PDD etc. is concerned..if I don't know the answer I'll find out for you
About Your Autistic Family Member:
My son, Michael now 18 years old is autistic. Initally was diagnosed at age 3 1/2 and has been in special education since then. He was diagnosed as having moderate to severe autism. Now he is able to function with supervision and has recently started to initiate conversation YEA !!! He is very sweet, and emotional at times. He still has meltdowns and continues with the stimming ..however they have decreased with age. He is currently taking Risperdal 0.5 mg daily ( 5 days a week) with success..went through alot of diffferent things before we found what would work for him for agitation..he used to bite and pinch his arm ( which he still does when frustrated at times) scream etc..He is my sunshine and I feel blessed the Lord chose me out ,of all the mothers on this planet, to be his Mom.
Favorite Thing To Do With Your Autistic Family Member:
We play Uno..and boy does he have the knack to beat me lately, watch movies. He loves yard work so we pick up pine cones and rake the pine straw. He draws pictures for me..now with little comments on them.(.I cry every time he gives me one.)..Listening to music with him... and LOVES to vacuum the floors....(the vacuum cleaner was one of his fixations for many years).these are a few of his favs. he loves the Grease soundtrack and actually sings the songs along with the music..I love to listen to him sing!!!!!!!..It warms my heart....
Thing You Hate Most About Autism:
The fact that my son will always need supervision and not ever be able to live independently, that he can't always tell me what is wrong when he starts to cry. (which just absolutly breaks my heart)..that he will never be able to drive, hang out with friends, go to school dances.. and experience teenage life........... I can however help make his life full, have confidence, with dignity along the way......My sunshine on a rainy day.

Diana,
Thank you for your very kind and thoughtful comment. I love teachng special education and cannot imagine spending my days doing anything else. I wish your daughter the best of luck in her studies. I graduated in 2006 from University of Delaware with Bachelors in Elementary and Special Education. This will be my 4th year teaching. And in January, I will starting coursework at Johns Hopkins University for Masters in Special Education with emphasis on Autism Education and Special Education Technology. Please feel free to share my contact information with your daughther if she would like to talk with someone in the field. Again, I appreciate your support and this wonderful online community you have started for families trying to cope with autism. Hope you have had a nice weekend and that your family enjoys the Thanksgiving holiday.
