About Me:
Married mother of three. Husband-John, stepson-Sage, son-Ian, daughter-Rubi
I work at Head Start as a child care aide. I collect cook books and love to try out new recipies. John works at a local factory and is a budding tattoo artist. We all love to read(or be read to), watch movies, listen and play music, and are involved in activities at our church, King Hill Baptist.
About Your Autistic Family Member:
My lovable son Ian is awaiting dx at Children's Mercy in Kansas City. He shows many ASD characteristics.
Favorite Thing To Do With Your Autistic Family Member:
Going to the park, watching him draw a super-hero picture (and telling me all about it), reading a bedtime story.
Thing You Hate Most About Autism:
That Ian isn't able to communicate like all the other kids. That people stare when he starts to stem or hum at inapropriate times.
Website:
I don't have a personal website but I belong to a few autism groups on myspace that have a great support system. There is also a great site called www.IANproject.org that has many resources for any state.

Wrongly diagnosing Autism

Did anyone else catch GMA this morning? They had a piece on Autism. They said that diagnosing Autism with behavioral tests only is doing a disservice to many kids. These children on the show accually had seziure disorders, but were dx with Autism because they behaved the same way an Autistic child does. The show suggested that our children need a brain scan (i.e. an MRI) to rule this out. After these children were correctly dx and were taking anti-seziure meds they progressed like a "normal" chi… Continue

Hi Karen,
So pleased you have finally got Ian's appointment. I know how frustrating the waiting is. We have finally got a meeting with Christopher's school with the teachers, doctor & SENCO (disability) officer. Its next week. Will keep you up to date how we go on.
Good luck love Abs xxx
