i am a 26 yr old stay at home mommy. I am doing everything and anything i can do to help my son. I love meeting and talking with other parents so i can get/give advice. I spread the word about autism as often as i can!
About Your Autistic Family Member:
My son, Christian Louis, was diagnosed with autism November of 2007. He is such a strong little boy, and he is trying so hard to break away from autism. He attended school for a few months, is out for the summer, and goes to OT twice a week. He can count to 20 and sing his abc's. He doesn't say much besides that, for the past couple months though, he babbles and makes vowel sounds and has said a few small short words, like up, on and of course he says da da. He loves to play peek a boo and go in the pool. He is still bad with other kids and noises, and still needs help with social and play skills. One thing about Christian is that he is always smiling, thats one thing about him that has never stopped. He has been smiling since he was born :) His smile can always brighten my day.
Favorite Thing To Do With Your Autistic Family Member:
We love to go in the pool and swim, eating at the table with him, or anytime when we play together, which is pretty much on and off all day :)
Thing You Hate Most About Autism:
That my son is so frustrated, upset and confused. That he hits himself due to his frustrations. That he cant talk to me to tell me whats wrong. That people stare at him and I when we are at a store if he is crying, and make faces like hes the worst kid on the planet. When people walk by him and say, wow, he needs a nap huh?! Or he sure is a cranky one! Not realizing that it hurts when they say it. Im sure a lot of parents can relate to those things. If you dont know why a child is crying, or wearing something different, or behaves differently, dont stare and SHUT UP!! ... had to get that out...

Hope you have a good weekend too! Did you watch the wrestling autism the other week? I saw bits of it - think its great that celebrities are prepared to raise awareness!! Good on them!
The idea is motivation to start with!!! Pick a few things that really motivate him ie favourite toy, drink or item of food and just work on those. You may need two of you to start with until he gets the idea that when he gives you that card - he gets what is on it STRAIGHT AWAY! You may need someone to sit behind him at the opp side of the table to you and guide his hand to pick up and pass the card so you can respond straight away (My daughter was great at that!) MAke loads of fuss and give him his request. you can move on at his pace when he gets the hang of asking for things - ie toilet, trampoline, different foods. Always use lts of language so that he can link the language and symbol and learn words too! Hope that helps!! speak to you soon x
LOVE HIS HEART. IT IS VERY FRUSTERATING AND I JUST WANT TO TAKE IT AWAY FROM HIM. AND IT HURTS BECAUSE YOU CANT. I WANT TO GET IN MY ANGELS HEAD SO BAD SOMETIMES IT BREAKS MY HEART BECAUSE I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO FOR HIM. HE WILL TALK AND I AM PATIENT. HUGS
